Hurry to Sign Up for Fall, Power & Sail Courses

Shiver me timbers! With several good promotions in full swing, we forgot to remind boaters that there is still space available in AYC's, Fall Power & Sail Courses. Please see the AYC website for full class descriptions and schedule (www.ayc.com)

Those interested in ASA 101 - Basic Keelboat class, look for this two-day course to teach novice sailors "the ropes." It is offered Sept. 19-20, Oct. 3-4 and Oct 7-8.

The ASA 101/103/104 - Basic Keelboat/Basic Coastal Cruising/Bareboat Chartering course combines classroom learning and "hands-on" skills during this 4-day/3-night class. Sign up for class Sept. 11-14, 18-21 & 25-28 or Oct. 2-5, 9-12 & 16-19.

AYC also offers four yachting courses: Power Cruising Twin Engine, Power Cruising Single Engine, Advanced Power Cruising and Skipper & 1st Mate Power Cruising. Each course is a 3-day/2-night class and they are all offered on the same dates, with classes running on Sept. 11-13, 18-20, 25-27 or Oct. 2-4, 9-11, 16-18.

Where can you go on a three-day, fall weekend cruise in the San Juan Islands? The answer is lots of wonderful places. Where you go mostly depends on the wind and weather and how long you want to linger over coffee and croissants.

After checkout at AYC headquarters on Friday morning, one easy itinerary is to head west across Rosario Strait and through Thatcher Pass between Blakely and Decatur islands. Continue northwest through pretty and protected Harney Channel to either moor at Deer Harbor on Orcas Island or anchor in the northern horseshoe off Jones Island State Park.

After a lovely evening of relaxing on board and the morning hiking the trails, head west through Spieden Channel for a second night at Roche Harbor. Visitors will be astounded how peaceful and intimate this boating mecca feels when the crowds are gone. Sunday morning, as you power or sail back to Anacortes, brew up a mug of "chocolat" and revel in the San Juans in the off-season.
