AYC Cruisers Tell Their Stories
SolariaAYC Charter Boat Cruise Spotlighted in Catalina Mainsheet Magazine

An article written by AYC charter vessel co-owner Ken Fischer of Portland, Ore., was recently published in the "Catalina Mainsheet Magazine." Ken describes how perfectly built and outfitted his 2005 Catalina 42 Solaria is for a three-week cruise to Desolation Sound. Along with co-owner Geoff Tobin of San Luis Obispo, Calif., the pair ventured beyond the San Juan and Gulf islands to Nanaimo, Pender Harbor, Princess Louisa Inlet and Desolation Sound. A participant in the AYC Yacht Ownership Program since 1998, Ken observes that placing Solaria in charter allows the guys to own a much larger and nicer boat than would otherwise be possible. Ken notes that he only has a few weeks' vacation, "I couldn't take full advantage of a boat, and it would spend a lot of time at the dock turning green!"

Commodore of the Catalina 42 Association, Ken observes that the program has been a good idea and this year's bookings are close to recent expectations. Still, he cautions that boat owners should be realistic. "If you use the boat every weekend or if you expect a huge tax write-off, the program may not work for you," explains Ken. "But if you expect a significant offset to the cost of ownership, then the program may be very advantageous."

"Frankly, boats die from lack of use," adds Ken. "The AYC team keeps the fleet vessels in such prime condition that when I sold my first charter boat, a Catalina 30, it earned top resale value."

AYC Skippered Charters — Have Your Cake & Eat It, Too!

Need a boat handling review before you bareboat? Why not hire a skipper for a few days or a week while you cruise the San Juans and Gulf Islands?

That is exactly what George and Beth Wood of Steamboat Springs, Colorado did last September. Although they had bareboat chartered with AYC in the past, they hadn't been out for several years. Besides, Beth wanted to learn how to run the boat so George could handle the foredeck work when docking and anchoring.

As a result, they hired AYC Instructor Larry Bishop to accompany them for a week's charter on a 43' Ocean Alexander. "We spent a fun week with lots of maneuvering and docking practice," recalls George, who appreciated the low-key review as well. "Beth went from low comfort to considerable comfort. She gained a lot of confidence."

George adds that Larry was an extraordinary teacher, who was extremely professional and aware of everything that was going on, "He is calm, patient and good at explaining things. Congenial and laidback, Larry was also sensitive to giving us our space."

Lucky Couple Describe AYC Power Boat Course as "Awesome!"

The lucky couple, that won the drawing for a free AYC Boating Course at the Seattle Boat Show in January, recently completed the course and independently described the experience as "awesome!"

Howard and Barbara Sawyer of Marysville completed the 3-day, Advanced Twin Engine Course in mid-May on a 39' Tollycraft. The weekend included 2-3 hours of classroom time, two nights onboard, one day of mostly cruising the San Juans and the second day spent practicing boat handling.

"What interested me most was charting and using the GPS to figure out how to avoid hazards," recalls Howard, a 53-year-old engineer. "I also appreciated how much we practiced coming in and out of the narrow marina entrance under windy conditions as well as docking from all different approaches. The repetition was great."

For Barbara the entire weekend was exhilarating and confidence boosting. A nurse who has never driven boats before, she notes that Larry was so engaging, supportive and corrective that she is thrilled to report, "I can handle this!"
